6th part of the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon (concept): 1.044 kilometers in 13:48 minutes – completed on Tuesday, April 12th 2016, in the quarter Lagoa (overall map). Film director Pedro Pontes lives in Rio de Janeiro (more about him).
Why did you choose this part to represent Rio de Janeiro at the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon?
I selected this place because I was a rower in the Clube do Botafogo from my 12th up to 20th year of life. I practised rowing here on the Lagoa so this place was very important for my development and also for the understanding of the discipline. As a film director I can still profit from this experience. For me the Lagoa is like a temple. That's why I have chosen this place, because I think that you can find a peaceful place there in the middle of the lake, a quiet place in the midst of chaos. I am very much interested in this contrast. And I think it is a very important and traditional sport for the Olympic Games and has generated many other sports. Therefore rowing represents the Olympic Games very well and the heart of rowing in Rio de Janeiro is here. We had hoped that the Olympics would leave a bequest, would at least clean the Lagoa, but unfortunately this will not happen, this hasn't worked out. But when I was a child, I dreamt of a clean Lagoa in which you could swim at random. I hope that one day I still shall experience a clean Lagoa so that one can take a bath without risking one's health.
