Nadam Guerra

26th part of the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon (concept): 2.601 kilometers in 25:04 minutes – completed on Saturday, April 16th 2016, in the quarter Centro (overall map). The artist Nadam Guerra (*1977) lives in Rio de Janeiro (more about him).

Statement

Why did you choose this part to represent Rio de Janeiro at the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon?

We began in the first street of Rio de Janeiro, in the Ladeira da Misericórdia which went up the Morro do Castelo However, the Morro do Castelo does not exist anymore, it has been levelled. I walked once around the Morro do Castelo that 100 years ago would have been seen to the right. And the sea would have been seen as it spread immediately over there. The Morro do Castelo was not only the place where the town was founded, it is also an interesting symbol of the town that erases her own history. We do not have the first settlement of Rio anymore, it has been wiped out, just as we have destroyed other important objects of the town history to build new ones. Here in front is the National Museum which was built to preserve the history of town. It was built precisely in the year in which the Morro do Castelo was levelled. We start to think about history in the exact moment we extinguish it. Last century we did this over and over again. We destroy objects, and after destroying something, we build a museum to remember the destroyed.
